On 2 January 2025, the WISE (Wireless Transportation Infrastructure Safety Evaluation) project was launched, an initiative that promises to modernise the way transport infrastructure is monitored in Portugal. By combining specialised sensor networks with satellite data and advanced artificial intelligence techniques, the project aims to increase safety and improve the efficiency of road and rail maintenance in Portugal.
Funded by COMPETE 2030, as part of the Portugal 2030 European Fund, WISE is part of a wider effort to modernise infrastructures and promote the digital transition, in line with the European Union’s objectives. The consortium responsible for the project is made up of three organisations: SPOTLITE – AETHRA, S.A., which leads the initiative, SOLVIT – Innovation on Telecommunications and the University of Minho (UMinho).
The implementation of WISE is expected to result in a significant reduction in maintenance costs, greater efficiency in accident prevention and a more agile response to incidents.
